Setanta members Gavin Ward and Debbie O'Brien are in this weeks "win a wedding competition" in the Argus. The competition asks you to vote for Dundalks most romantic couple, the winners will recieve a wedding courtesy of the Argus. To help Gavin and Debbie fill in the official entry form in the argus and leave it in to the Argus office on Park street. If you can't make it in to the office leave you entries at reception in Felda. There are many good reasons to do this; Girls if you do Gavin might "take you in his arms and try to sing and dance with you until you smile" and fella's if you do Gavin has promised an invite to the whole club with an extensive free bar, so get the votes in

Linda wins South Armagh Half Marathon
28th August
Many congratulations to Linda Meehan who won the ladies race in the South Armagh half marathon. Over 300 competitors took part with Linda being the sole Setanta representative. The race kicked off at high noon on a beautifully hot and sunny day as the athletes left Mullaghbawn for the tough hilly 13.1 mile course. The heat and hills definitely took there toll but not on Linda who finished in a fantastic 1.39.24 in her debut half marathon. Definitely a star in the making.
Premier League going down to the wire
28th August

The 2007 triathlon Ireland premier league is going down to the wire with Setanta athlete Liam Dolan currently leading the way. However Brian Campbells victory in Dublin will probably push him just ahead of Liam in the final standings. Liam has however definitely done enough to win the Male 25-29 category with 464 points. It is also looking good for podium finishes for Johnny McCabe in the Male 45-49 category. Johnny currently leads the age group with 379 points and whilst results from Dublin, Athlone, Carrick and next weeks Kenmare race have to be taken into account, Johnny seems to have an unassailable lead. Declan McCabe is currently in second in the Male 50-54 age group and whilst he will go close to winning the age group he most likely will have to settle for second. The third of the McCabe clan Gerry is currently in 4th place in the 40-44 age group but should move up to second behind Shane Scallding of Waterford when all results are added up.

The biggest surprise (no disrespect intended) is that in the highly competitive male 35-39 category Niall McCabe currently lies in second place, it is impossible to tell how this will fan out except that current leader Peter Savage from the Newry club will probably win the age group. Nevertheless to be in such a position in his first year is testament to the training that Niall has done and a points tally of 370 is a fantastic achievement and we all hope that he can hang in as high up as possible. He will be under pressure from clubmate Graham Townsend who despite currently lying in 39th in the category has his Dublin points and possibly Athlone to add.

Not to be outdone our ladies are making gradual inroads on the national scene. Mary Laverty currently lies in 5th place overall with 429 points and amazingly in the ultra competitive 30-34 age group that only leaves Mary in third place. Hopefully Mary can hang on to the podium place which would be amazing considering she did an Ironman in July. Linda Meehan is in 13th in the 35-39 category with Annmarie right behind her 14th. Next season promises to be even more successful for our ladies with Eve hopefully over her injuries and Amanda and Denise are now more comfortable in the water. Hopefully Mairead, Clare and others will be ready to take the plunge and Ciara might come back into the fold

What is most pleasing is that this now places Setanta as a club in second place in the Premier League standings just behind Waterford. Quite an achievement for our 3rd year. Many congratulations to all who have put us there and lets keep it going

Setanta Athletes in Lord & Lady of the Lake
28th August
Sunday 19th August saw the annual Camlough lake swim, and while local man Sean Mallon and local lady Aoife mc Court won their respective races  there were some outstanding performances from our swimmers. Thirty five competitors took to the line in far from ideal conditions to take on the challenge of the 1.8 mile long lake. A head on wind making the water very choppy only added to the nerves and coupled with the fact that many of the competitors had competed in the Lough Neagh tri the day before, ensured that even the most hardened swimmers were only interested in getting to the other end. All did well with everyone finishing, but a special word of congratulations to Niall mcCabe who couldn't swim 6 months ago and to Paul Watters for an impressive performance based on minimal training.

Many thank to the Camlough Festival committee for organising the race and for the refreshments after and to Johnny for coming down to help marshall the water.
Big week for Setanta Athletes
27th August

Next weekend is the final weekend in a busy season for many of our athletes and it shows how much our club has grown.

Liam Dolan heads to Kenmare to defend his Irish long course championship. The Lost sheep triathlon is considered the hardest on the Irish calendar with a 1.9k swim followed by a 90k extremely hilly cycle and the lovely half marathon to finish. Liam will be joined on the trek south by his faithful companion Ronan Green who will also be hoping to complete his third half Ironman distance event, drawing him ever closer to the big one.

On Sunday Stephen Carroll will enter the water in the Monaco 70.3 Ironman. This will be a great achievement for the Blackrock man who was not a strong swimmer 3 months ago. However his hard work has paid off and when he does get to dry land his great strenght in both cycling and running will come to the fore.

On the same day in Hamburg Celine McPhilips will be the sole Setanta representative on the Irish team at the World triathlon age group championships. With a season of injuries behind her we all hope that there is no further bad luck in store and that Celine enjoys fully the thrill of representing her country and the thrill of crossing the finish line in good spirits.

Best of luck to all 4 as Setanta athlethes head to the corners of Europe

Myles putting in the miles
27th July

The Dynamic Drogheda Duo of David Myles and Anthony Mc Gurk took part in Focus Ireland Triathlon in Kildare last weekend. David came an extremely impressive 7th overall, unfortunately Anthony had a DNF due to technical difficulties. This all adds up to another bit of sneaky training by the Setanta lads south of the county, these covert operations are inevitably going to lead to an outburst in the upcoming Olympic distance races, perhaps the lads have Carlingford on their minds...

Niall Mc cabe and Linda Meehan were the only Setanta reps present in Camlough on Wednesday evening for what was a good field in the Newry tri series. Niall finished in 8th place in a time of 50:27 while linda came in with 55:58 in 17th place. Noone fell off their bike this time.

Setanta Crew perfrom well at Triathlone
16th July

When the organiser’s shortened the swim from 750m to 600m the majority of the competitors would have breathed a sigh of relief, however their reasons for this where soon found out by what can only be described as an endless pool type current that the swimmers had to endure, indeed it was to be the beginning of the end for a lot of people on the day....(read more)

Camlough Tri Mini Series - Race 1
12th July

Camlough weaved its magic again to provide athletes with a glorious evening for the first of the Camlough mini tri series organised by Newry triathlon club. A 750 swim followed by a 10k cycle and a 3k run  over the Camlough main triathlon course was a great success with everyone greatly enjoying the novel distances.

We had 5 athletes taking part and all bar Niall Carroll had reason to be happy. Not that Niall had a bad race but a nasty fall of the bike left him badly gashed on his arms legs and back and even ripped his trisuit in the bum region....

Setanta Duathlon Series - Race 3
27th June

With the impending departure of the Ironpeople, the recently returned half-ironpeople, and the suffering from Blackrock still etched on some faces it was no surprise that we had the lowest turnout so far this season. The weather was also against us and while we were lucky it stayed dry there was a cold wind blowing straight into everyone’s faces on the return leg of the cycle making it more testing than on the previous two evenings....(read more)

The Wimblewall 4
17th June

Wimblewall 4 Update - All 4 finished their mission with ease, view their results here. Congratulations to Liam Dolan for winning his category and finishing 10th overall in a time of 4:43:21. Ronan Green finished in 6:02:00 in 244th, Ruairi Gogarty finished in 6:09:36 in 305th and Brian Cafferty came over the line in 6:34:37 in 482nd.

MI5 has been alerted by Interpol that at some stage this weekend 4 men, under the cover of "triathletes", will arrive in Exmoor Area. Some say the men are disillusioned and can be heard muttering "70.3", "56 miles....easy", "Hills, ha, I eat them for breakfast".

If you see these men, labeled "The Wimbelwall 4", stay away, their disease is very contagious

Almost 130 triathletes took part in the first Waterways Ireland Garadice Lake Triathlon outside Ballinamore on Sunday last June 3rd.The weather conditions were ideal with only slight drizzle at times to cool down the competitors. The race was officially started by Ballinamore Ac Olympian Colin Griffin and the sight of 126 swimmers in green swim hats was definitely a first for Garadice Lake.

Setanta Duathlon Series Race 2
27th May 2007

Round 2 of our duathlon series took place on a sun drenched tuesday night. The introduction of staggered starts seems to have gone down well and ensures that everyone must keep going because you don't know what is happening down the field. The times improved for almost every competitor and this shows the benefit of the races. With many of the first race winners opting to marshall it allowed mountain bikers Laverty and McKeown showcase their talents, however the real winner on the night was David Dollard who took an amazing 4min 55 sec of his first race, this sees David lead the overall series with Gerry Kenny, Niall McCabe and Declan McCabe close on his tail.

In the women's section Ann marie Gaynor has taken a slender lead over Bernadette O Keefe however no lady has taken part in both races.

The leaderboard is calculated on a very complicated basis that only I understand so complaints are a waste of time. However it is very close and with such notable athletes as Dolan, Green, Thorpe and Kinahan yet to show their hands it will only get closer. The next race will take place on Monday June 25 at the usual time to accommodate the iron men who leave the next day.

Special  mention must also be made to Anthony who last night ran the slowest first leg of a duathlon but in the process completed the first leg of an olympic triathlon and knows Blackrock inside out.

Slieve Gullion Wheelers 110k cycle
23rd May 2007

The Slieve Gullion 110k tour of south Armagh takes place this Saturday(26th May). The race starts at 10am from the Mountain house Inn between Camlough and Beleeks. The registration is from 9.15 and costs £10 or 15 euro. There will be soup and sandwiches at Newtownhamilton and at Mountain House(finish).

Every competitor gets a medal and all they ask is you wear a helmet and oil your bike. I know there are quite a few in the club interested in doing this so if you are considering it there will be plenty of friendly faces.

Womens National Training Day
16th May 2007

Setanta Duathlon Results
8th May 2007

The first race in the Setanta Duathlon series took place last night . With the rain staying away it meant that conditions were excellent and the 23 competitors had no excuses for what lay ahead. Once again Gerry McCabe led the way with a new course record some 59 seconds faster than his own previous record. Equally impressive was second placed Graham Townsend whose first run of 8.51 was also a record for that section of the course. Third place went to visiting Newry man Martin O Hagan. In the ladies section Celine McPhilips holds the lead from Denise Conway with Una Stewart in third. The Duathlons will run over the next few months with a series winner in both Male and Female category.

The next race is scheduled to take place on Tuesday May 29 again from Felda and this time hopefully with the blessing of the Gardai. I would like to thank our marshall's last night Mairead, Anmarie, Aidan, Mickey, Robert, Fionnuala and Ronan, we will need to have 8 Marshalls for the next race. I think everyone should drop out of one race to Marshall or take someone along who is willing to Marshall.
